In New York City, in the heart of Manhattan, the Russian Division of the Brownstone is talking to young Russian-speaking Jews on a daily basis. We are a global non-profit Jewish educational institution that operates in the US and around the world, aimed at enhancing the Russian-speaking Jewish community as a part of the global Jewish peoplehood, to strengthen its Jewish identity, to express itself, and to share its unique experience. We use the most innovative methods of experiential Jewish education to provide assistance to the Jewry of the Russian origin, encouraging them to explore  an exciting lifelong Jewish journey.

CITY TRIPS: RUSSIAN ADVENTURE

The New York Russian Jewish Exploration is a unique program for participants from all over the world. It is based on the educational concept of the Brownstone Experience to use Jewish NY and its Russian-speaking community as an experiential classroom.  The program includes:

Specially designed tours, and on-site workshops devoted to the history and the present day life of Jewish New York and its Russian-speaking community.

Interaction with prominent people including top Jewish professionals, philanthropists, spiritual leaders, leading business persons, well known figures of arts and culture of Russian decent and the mainstream Jewish community.

Hands-on experience. Participation in Brownstone social action. Acquaintance with New York’s biggest Jewish charity organizations (MET Council, F.E.G.S., welfare programs of the UJA Federation).

Learning about the Holocaust. Conversations with Jewish survivors, workshops about the unknown pages of Holocaust history and Jewish heroism with leading Russian-speaking experts.

Special Russian Shabbat Program in New York City. Taste of Jewish spirituality, intellectual discoveries, relaxation in the enjoyable atmosphere with Gateways leaders, prominent thinkers, philosophers, as well as with extraordinary people from the Russian Jewish community.

PROGRAMS of the RUSSIAN DIVISION

Our series of Jewish educational programs reflect unique features of Russian Jewish identity and present a laboratory of creativity and individual self-expression.

J-ART Annual cycle of interactive workshops dedicated to viewing Russian Jewry through the visual arts. The program combines presentations and discussions about dilemmas of Russian Jewry with art history, as well as presentations of Eastern European Jewish music treasures and textual studies. In collaboration with the Jewish Museum of New York,  Art Story Foundation.

TREE OF LIFE A captivating journey into the history of Russian Jewish families, discoveries of individual genealogical roots, restoration of family history, and exhibitions of family documents and artifacts. These workshops connect individual stories of Russian Jews with their American counterparts and around Jews the globe. The program is implemented in collaboration with HIAS, YIVO Institute of Jewish Research, NY Jewish Heritage Museum, Oral History Project at the Harriman Institute of Columbia University, and American Jewish Historical Society.

CAFÉ 18 CHAIRS A variety of informal meetings, workshops, discussions, Jewish text studies in the relaxed atmosphere of the Brownstone café. This is a great opportunity for participants to express themselves, to take part in the hottest discussions, to shmooze with the extraordinary guests, to find answers and to ask Jewish questions.

KINOFABRIKA An annual program of films presentations devoted to Jewish topics and accompanied by discussions, and meetings with actors, producers, and experts. Our special “FILM-MIDRASH” program screens selected films to be used for exploration of Jewish values, moral dilemmas and ethical questions.

PODIUM A laboratory for young Russian Jewish writers and poets, artists and designers, musicians and actors. We are happy to provide our luxury location, spaces, auditoriums, as well as promotional opportunities for their innovative experiments. We help them organize their performances, exhibitions, and concerts with the aim to present new talents to a broader community and to share their Russian Jewish experience with the world.

ED-TUSOVKA Educational programs of the Brownstone Russian Division transformed into interactive online forums engaging virtual participants of Russian-speaking Jewish communities from all over the world.

ANNUAL EVENTS

ART OF THE RUSSIAN JEWISH DIASPORA  Annual festival of the best achievements in fine arts of the global Russian Jewish Diaspora. A variety of exhibitions, round tables, and presentations makes this event unforgettable; the art creates bridges with other Jewish communities.

RUSSIAN JEWISH FILMS FESTIVAL   A week-long presentation of the best movies from the countries of the Russian Jewish Diaspora, dedicated to Jewish subjects. It showcases the movie art achievements of the international Russian Jewish community.

NEW WAVE  Annual festival of arts of young Russian-speaking Jewish Americans.

BABY YARCOMMEMORATION  Baby Yar is a symbol of Holocaust in the former Soviet Union.  The annual Baby Yar commemoration event is a meaningful part of the High Holidays celebration at the Brownstone Russian Division.

ANNUAL CYCLE OF JEWISH HOLIDAYS at the Brownstone Russian Division is a combination of Jewish traditions, spiritual searches, learning, Russian Jewish self-expression in innovative experimental forms, and… much fun!

PURIMSHPILS CONTEST A festival of one of the most favorite Jewish holidays that has deep roots in the Russian Jewish culture.  This contest is a fantastic combination of Jewish traditions, KAPUSTNIK experience, colorful carnivals, youth creativity and unlimited innovations.
